What 6th Grade children learn in math

In 6th Grade, STAAR math covers integers and rational numbers, ratios and rates, percentages, expressions and equations, and area of triangles and other shapes.

What the 6th Grade check looks at

Numerical representations and relationships

Place value, comparing and rounding numbers, fractions and decimals.

  • Prime and composite numbers
  • Order integers
  • Integers on a number line
  • Square numbers
  • Percentage of a quantity
  • Fractions, decimals and percentages
  • Add fractions with unlike denominators
  • Multiply a fraction by a whole number

Curriculum: Common Core 6.NS.C.7

Try at home: Ask your child to compare prices, read big numbers aloud and say which fraction of a pizza is bigger.

Computations and algebraic relationships

Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing, and solving problems with them.

  • Subtract decimals
  • Missing numbers
  • Multi-step money problems
  • Estimate with decimals
  • Long division

Geometry and measurement

Time, length, area, perimeter, shapes and angles.

  • Area of triangles
  • Angles on a straight line
  • Angles in a triangle
  • Convert with decimals

Curriculum: Common Core 6.G.A.1

Try some 6th Grade questions

These are the kind of questions in the check. Every check has fresh numbers, so your child will not have seen them before.

Numerical representations and relationships

Which of these is a prime number?

  • 49
  • 37
  • 33
  • 21
Show the answer

37. 37 has exactly two factors: 1 and 37. The others can be divided by another number.

Computations and algebraic relationships

10.8 − 4.27 = ?

  • 7.53
  • 6.53
  • 6.54
  • 6.43
Show the answer

6.53. Write 10.8 as 10.80, then subtract: 6.53.

Geometry and measurement

A triangle has a base of 8 in and a height of 11 in. What is its area?

Show the answer

44 in². Area = ½ × base × height = ½ × 8 × 11 = 44.

How it works

  1. Your child answers 20 STAAR-style math questions across numbers and fractions, computation, and geometry and measurement. Questions get easier or harder as they go.
  2. See how they’re going. On track, a little behind, or needs support, for their grade.
