What 5th Grade children learn in math

In 5th Grade, STAAR math covers decimals to thousandths, adding and subtracting fractions, long division, volume, the coordinate grid and multi-step problems.

What the 5th Grade check looks at

Numerical representations and relationships

Place value, comparing and rounding numbers, fractions and decimals.

  • Factors
  • Multiples
  • Round to the nearest 10,000 or 100,000
  • Compare large numbers
  • Compare decimals to thousandths
  • Add fractions with related denominators
  • Fraction of a quantity
  • Improper fractions and mixed numbers

Curriculum: Common Core 4.OA.B.4

Try at home: Ask your child to compare prices, read big numbers aloud and say which fraction of a pizza is bigger.

Computations and algebraic relationships

Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing, and solving problems with them.

  • Add decimals
  • Subtract large numbers
  • Money: change
  • Two-step word problems
  • Multiply two-digit numbers
  • Divide with remainders
  • Multiply by 10, 100 and 1,000
  • Interpret remainders

Try at home: Practice a few multiplication facts each day and ask your child to explain how they solved a word problem.

Geometry and measurement

Time, length, area, perimeter, shapes and angles.

  • Area of larger rectangles
  • Convert units
  • Volume of rectangular prisms
  • Time: 24-hour time and durations

Curriculum: Common Core 5.MD.C.5

Try at home: Measure things around the house together and work out area and perimeter of rooms or rugs.

Try some 5th Grade questions

These are the kind of questions in the check. Every check has fresh numbers, so your child will not have seen them before.

Numerical representations and relationships

Which number is a factor of 42?

  • 12
  • 14
  • 11
  • 8
Show the answer

14. 14 × 3 = 42, so 14 is a factor of 42.

Computations and algebraic relationships

3.5 + 3.21 = ?

  • 6.71
  • 6.81
  • 3.82
  • 3.56
Show the answer

6.71. Line up the decimal points: 3.50 + 3.21 = 6.71.

Geometry and measurement

A room is 11 ft long and 14 ft wide. What is its area?

Show the answer

154 ft². 11 × 14 = 154 square feet.
