What 2nd Grade children learn in math

In 2nd Grade, children learn the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication facts, starting with skip counting, and begin to see multiplication as equal groups.

What the 2nd Grade check looks at

2, 5 and 10 multiplication facts

The first tables children learn, by skip counting and then by heart.

  • The 2, 5 and 10 multiplication facts: recall

Curriculum: Common Core 2.OA.C.4

Try at home: Skip count by 2s, 5s and 10s on the way to school, then ask your child to jump straight to “6 fives”.

3, 4 and 8 multiplication facts

Built from doubling: the 4s are double the 2s, the 8s double the 4s.

  • The 3, 4 and 8 multiplication facts: warm-up (×1 to ×5)

Curriculum: Common Core 3.OA.C.7

Try at home: Practice doubling: if your child knows 3 × 4 = 12, then 3 × 8 is double 12.

6, 7 and 9 multiplication facts

The trickiest facts, usually the last to become automatic.

  • The 6, 7 and 9 multiplication facts: warm-up (×1 to ×5)

Curriculum: Common Core 3.OA.C.7

Try at home: Learn the 9s with the finger trick and work on two or three 7s and 8s facts at a time.

11 and 12 multiplication facts

Extension facts up to 12 × 12.

  • The 11 and 12 multiplication facts: warm-up (×1 to ×5)

Curriculum: Common Core 4.NBT.B.5

Try at home: Connect 12 × n to 10 × n + 2 × n, for example 12 × 7 = 70 + 14.

Division facts

Using multiplication facts backwards: if 6 × 7 = 42, then 42 ÷ 7 = 6.

  • Division facts: warm-up (×1 to ×5)

Curriculum: Common Core 3.OA.C.7

Try at home: Every time you practice a multiplication table fact, ask the matching division fact too.

Try some 2nd Grade questions

These are the kind of questions in the check. Every check has fresh numbers, so your child will not have seen them before.

How it works

  1. Your child answers about 20 questions. Each one has a few seconds on the clock, because quick, accurate recall is what the check measures.
  2. See how they’re going. On track, a little behind, or needs support, for their grade.
  3. Get the full report. Strengths and gaps in 5 areas, emailed to you, plus a free assessment at your nearest Success Tutoring center if you’d like one.

Questions parents ask

Which multiplication facts should a 2nd Grade child know?

See “What 2nd Grade children learn” above. As a guide, most curricula expect the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication facts first, then the 3s, 4s and 8s, and all facts to 10 × 10 by about Year 4 (4th Grade in the US).

Why is the test timed?

Eight seconds is enough to recall a fact but not to count it out. Quick recall frees up working memory for harder problems, so speed and accuracy together are the best sign that a table is learned.

Is it free?

Yes. The test and the full report are free, and there is no sign-up to start.

What if my child runs out of time?

That is fine. A question that runs out of time counts as one to practice, and the next one in that table is a little easier.

How can we practice at home?

A few minutes a day beats one long session. Focus on two or three facts at a time, say each one with its division fact, and try our free multiplication facts games.
