What Year 5 children learn in maths

In Year 5, children multiply and divide larger numbers, use factors and multiples, compare decimals to thousandths, add fractions, and convert between units of measurement.

What the Year 5 check looks at

Number and place value

Reading, ordering and rounding numbers, and knowing what each digit is worth.

  • Factors
  • Multiples
  • Round to the nearest 10,000 or 100,000
  • Compare large numbers

Try at home: Ask your child to read big numbers on signs and receipts and say what each digit is worth.

Adding and subtracting

Number facts, mental strategies and written methods for adding and taking away.

  • Add decimals
  • Subtract large numbers
  • Money: change
  • Two-step word problems

Try at home: Play quick-fire number fact games in the car: “What is 8 + 7? And 15 − 7?”

Multiplying and dividing

Equal groups, times tables, division and solving problems with them.

  • Multiply two-digit numbers
  • Divide with remainders
  • Multiply by 10, 100 and 1,000
  • Interpret remainders

Curriculum: Australian Curriculum AC9M5N07

Try at home: Practise a few times tables facts each day, a little and often, and connect each one to a division fact.

Fractions and decimals

Parts of a whole, equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages.

  • Compare decimals to thousandths
  • Add fractions with related denominators
  • Fraction of a quantity
  • Improper fractions and mixed numbers

Curriculum: Australian Curriculum AC9M5N01

Try at home: Use pizza, chocolate and measuring cups to talk about halves, quarters and thirds.

Measurement and geometry

Time, length, area, shapes and angles.

  • Area of larger rectangles
  • Convert units
  • Volume of rectangular prisms
  • Time: 24-hour time and durations

Try at home: Ask your child to read an analogue clock and work out how long until dinner or bedtime.

Try some Year 5 questions

These are the kind of questions in the check. Every check has fresh numbers, so your child will not have seen them before.

Number and place value

Which number is a factor of 42?

  • 12
  • 14
  • 11
  • 8
Show the answer

14. 14 × 3 = 42, so 14 is a factor of 42.

Adding and subtracting

3.5 + 3.21 = ?

  • 6.71
  • 6.81
  • 3.82
  • 3.56
Show the answer

6.71. Line up the decimal points: 3.50 + 3.21 = 6.71.

Multiplying and dividing

16 × 29 = ?

Show the answer

464. 16 × 20 = 320, plus 16 × 9 = 144: 464.

Questions parents ask

Is the Year 5 maths test really free?

Yes. The test and the full report are free. You only enter your details at the end, to see the full report and to be matched to your nearest Success Tutoring centre.

How long does it take?

About 10 minutes for around 18 questions. There is no time limit, and children can skip any question they are unsure of.

What does the test cover?

Number and place value, adding and subtracting, multiplying and dividing, fractions and decimals, and measurement and geometry, at the level expected in Year 5.

What if my child finds it hard?

The questions adapt: after a miss, the next question in that area is a little easier, so nobody gets stuck on a wall of hard questions. The report shows where they are working now and what to build next.

Is this a formal assessment?

No. It is a quick snapshot to help you see where your child is at. For a full picture, you can book a free assessment with a Success Tutoring teacher.

What happens to my child’s information?

Children never enter personal details. We keep only their year level and, if you give it, their first name. Your contact details are only collected from you, at the end, with your permission.
